Arriving in Jeddah — King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah (KAIA) is the main gateway for pilgrims coming from Europe. Here is what you need to know to spend the first hours in the best conditions.

Hajj Terminal vs. Main Terminal

Jeddah airport has a dedicated Hajj and Umrah terminal (Terminal 1). Charter flights during the season may be routed there. For regular international flights, you will arrive at Terminal 2 (new terminal).

Immigration and Customs

Upon arrival, prepare:

  • Passport + valid visa (e-visa or glued Umrah visa)
  • Arrival form (often digitized via the Absher app)
  • Customs declaration if carrying declarable goods

Biometric processing (fingerprint, photo) is systematic for first-time entrants. Allow 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic.

Currency Exchange and Money

Currency exchange offices are available in the arrival areas. The Saudi Riyal (SAR) is the only locally accepted currency. Visa/Mastercard cards are widely accepted in hotels and shopping malls, but carry cash for small purchases.

Where to Put on Ihram?

If you arrive by plane from Europe, you have two options:

  • Before the flight: at the departure airport or on board, crossing the aerial miqat (approximately 1 hour before Jeddah)
  • In Jeddah: go to Al-Miqat mosque (Masjid al-Tan’im) — recommended if you are unsure of your timing

First Time in Saudi Arabia

The dress code is strict in public places. Women must wear an abaya outside international hotels. Possession of alcohol is totally forbidden. Kindness and respect towards locals greatly facilitate the stay.
