The Tahallul: Exiting Ihram after Umrah

Tahallul (التحلل) marks the exit from the state of ihram and the end of Umrah rites. After completing Tawaf and Sa’i, the pilgrim is freed from ihram restrictions by this symbolic act.
Tahallul for Men
For men, Tahallul can take two forms:
- Halq (complete shaving) — Preferred according to many scholars. Sign of total humility before Allah.
- Taqsir (shortening) — Evenly cut hair of at least 2–3 cm all around the head. Valid but less recommended.
Barbers (hallaqeen) are available in abundance around Masjid Al-Haram. Expect 15 to 30 SAR for a shave. Go after Sa’i — they know about Umrah.
Tahallul for Women
Women perform Taqsir: cut a strand of hair equivalent to the width of a phalanx (~2–3 cm), at the tip of the hair. She can do it herself or with the help of a companion.
Complete shaving is not recommended for women.
After Tahallul
Once Tahallul is performed, all ihram restrictions are lifted:
- ✅ You may dress normally
- ✅ Use perfume
- ✅ Resume normal activities
- ✅ Couples may resume marital relations
Congratulations — Your Umrah Is Complete!
After Tahallul, take a moment to thank Allah, make dhikr and du’as. Umrah expiates minor sins between two Umrahs — enjoy this state of purity.
The traditional next step is the visit to Medina. Discover our guide: Visiting Masjid An-Nabawi. To organize travel to Medina, see Mecca → Medina.
The Spiritual Meaning of Tahallul
Tahallul is not merely a physical act — it is the symbolic lifting of the sacred state. By cutting hair, the pilgrim signifies their return to the ordinary world, transformed. Islamic scholars emphasize that complete shaving (halq) is preferable to simple shortening (taqsir), as it expresses more total surrender.
For women, cutting the equivalent of a phalanx of hair is sufficient — the value is in the act, not the amount. Tahallul concludes Umrah and lifts all ihram restrictions.
After Tahallul — What Next?
Once out of ihram, you may perfume yourself, wear your regular clothes, and resume your journey. Many pilgrims take advantage of this moment for a final prayer in the Haram, an optional Nafila Tawaf (not related to Umrah), or simply contemplate the Kaaba one last time before departing for Medina or your final destination.
