Umrah Equipment List: Essential Gear for Men and Women

Properly preparing your gear is essential for a stress-free Umrah. Whether you are traveling for 3 days or 2 weeks, this checklist ensures you do not forget anything — while staying within transit baggage limits.

The Ihram: The Pilgrim’s Garment

For Men

• 2 pieces of unsewn white fabric (terry cloth, toweling, or light cotton) — one for the upper body, one for the lower body
• Belt or cord to secure the lower ihram
• Simple strap sandals (feet must be partially exposed while in ihram)
• Optional: waist bag to store documents and phone without pockets

For Women

• Modest garment covering the entire body — loose abaya or long, wide set
• Hijab — traditional white or a subdued color
• No niqab during Tawaf (according to the majority of scholarly opinions)
• Comfortable shoes for walking several kilometers

First Aid and Health

Heat in Mecca can exceed 40°C (104°F) in summer. Prepare the following:

• Sunscreen SPF 50+ (essential protection during outdoor walks)
• Oral rehydration salts
• Anti-diarrheal medication and antispasmodics
• Paracetamol and ibuprofen
• Nasal humidifying spray (air conditioning in the Haram is very dry)
• Your regular medications with a doctor’s prescription
• Meningitis ACWY vaccine is mandatory — at least 10 days before departure

Luggage and Accessories

• Lightweight 20–30L backpack for daily trips around the Haram
• Waterproof phone pouch (condensation in the air-conditioned Mas’a)
• Charger + portable battery (minimum 10,000 mAh) — you will need Nusuk throughout the day
• Saudi Arabia power adapter (type G, same as the United Kingdom)
• Small reusable water bottle — Zamzam water is free throughout the Haram

• Nusuk (mandatory) — Umrah permit, reservations, navigation within the Haram
