FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions about Transit Umrah

General Information
What is the minimum duration to perform Umrah?
Technically, the Umrah rites can be completed in 3 to 5 hours. However, for a peaceful experience including Medina, plan for a minimum of 3 to 5 days on-site.
Can I perform Umrah without a travel agency?
Yes, for holders of a Saudi tourist e-visa. You manage your own bookings via the Nusuk app. Only nationals ineligible for the e-visa (such as Indonesians without a Schengen visa) must go through an accredited agency.
Is Umrah open all year round?
No. It is suspended for approximately 6 weeks around Hajj (mid-Shawwal to the end of Dhu al-Hijjah). The new Umrah season traditionally opens on 1st Muharram.
Visa
I am French — which visa do I need?
The Saudi tourist e-visa (visa.visitsaudi.com), approximately €100, valid for 1 year. Simple, fast, no agency required.
I have a Schengen residence permit — can I use the e-visa?
Yes, if your Schengen visa is valid and has already been used (entry stamp in a Schengen country).
Practical Information
Do I need to book a hotel before getting the visa?
Since June 2025, booking via Nusuk (BRN) is mandatory for the classic Umrah visa. For the e-visa, it is not required for entry into Saudi Arabia, but Nusuk requires a validated hotel booking to issue the Umrah permit.
Can women travel alone for Umrah?
Yes, since 2022 Saudi Arabia no longer requires a mahram for women aged 18 and over on a tourist e-visa. For the classic Umrah visa through an agent, specific rules apply depending on the agency.
