Transports Arabie Saoudite — Once you arrive in Jeddah, several options are available to reach Mecca and Medina. From high-speed rail to rideshare services, here is the complete guide to Saudi transport.

The Haramain High-Speed Railway (HHR)

This is the recommended option for transits. The train connects:

  • Jeddah (airport) ↔ Mecca: 30 minutes
  • Mecca ↔ Medina: approximately 2 hours

Book your tickets via the Haramain Train app or at hhr.com.sa. Fares: 50 to 120 SAR depending on class.

SAPTCO Buses (Public Transport)

National carrier SAPTCO operates regular services between Jeddah and Mecca. It is the most economical but also the slowest option (1h30 to 2h depending on traffic).

Uber and Careem

Ride-hailing apps are widely used in Saudi Arabia. Uber and Careem (owned by Uber) work perfectly in Jeddah. To enter Mecca, the driver must be Muslim — this is verified automatically in the app.

Getting Around Mecca

In Mecca, getting around the Haram is mainly done on foot. For more distant sites (Muzdalifah, Mina, Arafat), Mashaer buses are available. Walking remains the best option for the spiritual atmosphere of the place.

Transit Tip

For a short transit (3-5 days), the optimal plan is: Jeddah → Mecca (train, 30 min) → Mecca (2-3 nights) → Medina (train, 2h) → Medina (1-2 nights) → return to Jeddah for your next flight.

Practical Tips for Transport in Saudi Arabia

To optimize your travel, download Uber and Careem before leaving France — both apps work perfectly in Saudi Arabia and accept European cards. The Haramain train is by far the most comfortable transport between the holy cities, with air-conditioned carriages and exemplary punctuality.

Avoid unofficial taxis that park at the exits of the Haram — they charge abusive fares for foreign pilgrims. Always opt for Uber or official shuttles from hotels.

Schedules and Frequencies

  • Haramain Train Jeddah → Mecca: 12 min, departures every 20-30 min, 50 SAR (~13€)
  • Haramain Train Mecca → Medina: 2h, 5-8 departures/day, 200 SAR (~53€)
  • Saptco buses: slower but much cheaper (~10 SAR)
  • Uber in Mecca: expect 15-40 SAR depending on destination and time of day
