Beyond the rites of Umrah, Mecca and Medina are open-air museums of Islamic history. These visits deeply enrich your pilgrimage by reconnecting you to the origins of Islam.

In Mecca

Jabal an-Nour (جبل النور) — The Mountain of Light

It is in the Hira Cave, at the summit of Jabal an-Nour, that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) received the first Quranic revelation (Surah Al-Alaq). The climb takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes (about 640 steps). The view over Mecca from the summit is breathtaking.

  • Access: from the Al-Hijra district (15 min from the Haram by Uber)
  • Best time: early morning to avoid heat and crowds

Jabal Thawr (جبل ثور)

The Cave of Thawr is where the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) hid for 3 days during the Hijra to Medina. More challenging to access than Jabal an-Nour, this climb is recommended for those in good physical shape.

Masjid al-Jinn

This small mosque marks the place where a group of jinn heard the Prophet recite the Quran and embraced Islam. Mentioned in Surah Al-Jinn.

Al-Ma’la Cemetery (Jannat Al-Mu’alla)

One of the oldest and most sacred cemeteries in Islam, where many members of the Prophet’s family rest, including Khadija (may Allah be pleased with her), his first wife. A reverent visit is recommended.

In Medina

Masjid Quba — The First Mosque in Islam

Built by the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself, Masjid Quba is the very first mosque in Islamic history. Praying 2 rak’ahs in this mosque is equivalent to Umrah according to an authentic hadith.

  • Distance: 5 km from downtown Medina
  • Access: Uber or bus from Masjid Nabawi

Masjid Al-Qiblatayn

The “Mosque of the Two Qiblas” — it is here that the Qibla was changed from Jerusalem to Mecca, during an ongoing prayer.

Jabal Uhud and the Martyrs

The site of the famous Battle of Uhud (3 AH), where 70 Companions were martyred, including Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet’s uncle. The martyrs’ cemetery is a place of intense reflection.

Al-Baqi (Jannat Al-Baqi)

A cemetery adjacent to Masjid An-Nabawi, where many members of the Prophet’s family and his Companions rest.
