Bringing back gifts from Mecca and Medina is a cherished tradition among pilgrims. But with so many shops and widely varying prices, knowing where and how to buy can make a real difference. Here is your complete guide.

Essential Souvenirs

Zamzam Water

The most sacred water in Islam. In Mecca, it is available free of charge and in abundance throughout the Haram (fountains, taps, distributions at entrances). To take some home:

  • Official bottles sold at shops around the Haram (1.5L, 5L, 10L)
  • Allowed in Europe as checked baggage up to 5 litres (not permitted in cabin)
  • Price: 5 to 20 SAR depending on size

Dates

Medina dates are world-renowned. The best varieties:

  • Ajwa — The most sacred (sunnah to eat them in the morning). Higher price (~100–200 SAR/kg)
  • Medjoul — Large, moist, sweet. Best value for money
  • Safawi, Sukkari — Excellent options at more affordable prices

Perfumes and Oud

Saudi Arabia is a paradise for Islamic perfumes. Specialties to look for:

  • Oud (عود) — Precious wood resin with an intoxicating fragrance. Price: 50 to 5,000 SAR depending on quality
  • Attar / Itr — Alcohol-free essential oil-based perfumes. Ideal for travel
  • Bukhoor — Incense to burn on hot coals. Traditional home fragrance

Other Popular Souvenirs

  • Tasbih (prayer beads) — Dhikr counting beads, in wood, semi-precious stone, or plastic
  • Abaya and djellaba — Quality Islamic garments, cheaper than in Europe
  • Prayer rug — A practical and lasting memento
  • Quran (Mushaf) — High-quality Saudi editions, often available free in mosques

Where to Buy?

Traditional Souks (recommended ✅)

The souks around the Haram (Souk Al-Layl in Mecca, shopping streets near Gate 5 in Medina) offer the best prices with negotiation. Bargaining is the norm — always start at 40–50% of the displayed price.

Shopping Malls (comfort, fixed prices)

For guaranteed authentic purchases without the stress of bargaining: Abraj Al-Bait Mall (Mecca) and the galleries of international hotels.

Average Budget

  • Modest souvenir budget: 200–400 SAR (~€55–110)
  • Reasonable family budget: 500–1,000 SAR
  • Substantial purchases (quality oud, dates in bulk): 1,500 SAR+
