The Miqat — Points of Sanctification for Umrah

The Miqat (ميقات) refers to the geographic boundaries set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) beyond which no pilgrim may enter Mecca without being in a state of Ihram. Understanding the Miqat is crucial to avoid invalidating your Umrah.
The 5 Land Miqat Points
| Miqat Name | Location | For pilgrims coming from… |
|---|---|---|
| Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali) | 9 km from Medina | Medina and beyond (north) |
| Al-Juhfah (Rabigh) | On the coast, northwest of Mecca | Syria, Egypt, Morocco, Europe ✅ |
| Qarn Al-Manazil (As-Sayl) | East of Mecca | Najd, Kuwait, Bahrain |
| Yalamlam | Southeast of Mecca | Yemen, India, Pakistan, Indonesia ✅ |
| Dhat Irq | Northeast | Iraq, Iran, Central Asia |
The Aerial Miqat
For travelers by plane from Europe, the aerial Miqat is located above the geographic position of the nearest Miqat along the flight route. In practice:
- On the Paris → Jeddah flight, the aerial Miqat is located approximately 1 hour before landing
- The captain usually announces the Miqat for pilgrims
- Don your ihram and pronounce the Niyyah before this announcement
Practical tip: change in the plane’s lavatory before the announcement, or in the departure airport lounge if you are sure of your connection.
If You Have Crossed the Miqat Without Ihram
If you have arrived in Jeddah without being in ihram, do not panic. Go to Masjid Al-Tan’im (also called Masjid Aisha) on the outskirts of Mecca — it is the closest Miqat for those already in Jeddah. Enter ihram there before proceeding to Mecca. A dam (expiation) may be required according to some scholars — consult a scholar.

The Miqat According to Your Departure Point
The choice of Miqat depends on your itinerary. For travelers from France by air via Jeddah, the Miqat is Juhfa / Rabigh — located approximately 200 km north of Jeddah. If your plane flies over this point before landing, you must take ihram on board.
For pilgrims arriving directly at Medina airport (MED), the Miqat is Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali) — just 9 km from Medina, before taking the road to Mecca.
Taking Ihram on the Plane
- Ask the crew to warn you 30 min before flying over the Miqat
- Ideally perform ghusl (full purification) at the departure airport
- Don the ihram in the plane’s lavatory if you have not done so before
- Pronounce the Niyyah and Talbiyah after crossing the Miqat point
