The Tawaf is the heart of Umrah. This Arabic word means “to circle around” — it designates the 7 circumambulations performed around the Kaaba in a counter-clockwise direction. It is an act of worship whose visual and spiritual beauty is unmatched.

How the Tawaf is Performed

Preparation

  • Be in a state of ablution (wudu) — mandatory
  • Be in a state of ihram (for Umrah)
  • For men: perform Idtiba — pass the Rida under the right arm, right shoulder bare

The Procedure

  1. Start facing the Hajar Al-Aswad (Black Stone), aligning your right shoulder with it
  2. Pronounce: Bismillah, Allahu Akbar while pointing the hand toward the Stone (or touching/kissing it if possible)
  3. Circle around the Kaaba keeping it on your left — counter-clockwise direction
  4. Repeat this gesture 7 times — each pass before the Hajar Al-Aswad completes one circuit
  5. When passing before the Rukn Al-Yamani (Yemeni corner), touch it with your hand if possible

The Duas of Tawaf

There is no specific dua fixed for Tawaf — you pray freely. Between the Rukn Al-Yamani and the Hajar Al-Aswad, it is recommended to recite:

Rabbanā ātinā fī’d-dunyā ḥasanatan wa fī’l-ākhirati ḥasanatan wa qinā ‘dhāba’n-nār

“Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”

The 2 Rak’ahs Prayer After Tawaf

After completing the 7 circuits, go to Maqam Ibrahim (the Station of Abraham) and perform 2 rak’ahs behind it. If it is too crowded, anywhere in the Masjid is acceptable.

Practical Tips

  • Avoid peak hours (after Friday prayer, Ramadan)
  • The distant areas from the Kaaba (upper floors) are less crowded but the Tawaf is equally valid there
  • Stay hydrated — Zamzam water is available everywhere, free and abundant
  • Use the Nusuk app to see real-time crowd levels

Next step: The Sa’i between Safa and Marwa.

Practical Tips for Tawaf

The Tawaf is one of the most intense rites of Umrah — physically and spiritually. Experienced pilgrims unanimously advise: choose your timing wisely. The least crowded hours are between Fajr and Dohr (approximately 7am-11am) and after Isha (10pm-midnight). Avoid the time of Friday prayer.

Since 2022, Masjid Al-Haram has been significantly expanded — the upper levels offer more space and flow. Tawaf on level 1 (ground floor) is closest to the Kaaba but also the most densely crowded. People with reduced mobility can perform Tawaf in an electric wheelchair, available for rent on site.

Recommended Duas During Tawaf

There are no fixed obligatory duas for each circuit — you are free to recite what your heart feels. Many pilgrims use a personal supplication booklet or the Nusuk app, which offers guided invocations per circuit.
