Getting Around Mecca — Local Transport Guide

Once you have arrived in Mecca, you will need to navigate between your hotel, Masjid Al-Haram, and the surrounding sites. Here are all the transport options available.
On Foot — The Best Option Around the Haram
If you are staying within 500m to 1km of the Haram (Abraj Al-Bait, Ajyad, Aziziyah hotels nearby), walking is recommended. It is part of the spiritual experience and immerses you in the unique atmosphere of the Haram. The walk from your hotel to King Abdulaziz Gate is often the most frequent journey.
Mashaer Bus (pilgrim transport)
The Mashaer bus network serves the pilgrimage sites around Mecca:
- Mecca → Mina, Muzdalifah, Arafat (Hajj sites, accessible for Umrah visitors)
- Mecca → Jabal an-Nour (departure from designated stops)
- Free for Hajj permit holders, paid for Umrah visitors
Uber and Careem
Ride-hailing apps work well within Mecca. Use them to:
- Reach the Haramain station from your hotel (5-15 min depending on location)
- Go to Jabal an-Nour, Jabal Thawr or Al-Ma’la
- Return to Jeddah airport if you are not taking the train
Local Taxi
White taxis operating in Mecca can be hailed on the street. Always negotiate the price before getting in. Prefer Uber for tariff transparency.
Mecca Metro
The local Haramain line (Line 1) connects Al-Rusayfah station to the city center and the Haram. Not very frequent outside peak seasons, it can be useful to avoid traffic jams during prayer times.
